Solutions Architect and Payments Expert – EMV Chip and Mobile Specifications, Products and Standards

Our Team

We are a small team of payments technical experts in a centre of excellence based in the US (and UK) embedded within our wider Global Network Technology team

Team members work for the majority of time in our modern office environment, and, are based locally in the region. we enjoy dynamic and interesting daily work and we have an excellent work/life balance, and flexible working practices.

International Travel is required from time-to-time when working on industry standards or on internal American Express business initiatives.

The Challenge

As a part of our commitments to EMVCo, the industry technical body responsible for secure and interoperable payment solutions, members of the team contribute to its work and mission and may represent American Express positions and interests there.

Within Amex you’ll work closely with a variety of Network Product teams and others using your skills in the domain of EMV Chip & Mobile payment products applied to POS terminals, cards and mobile devices to define solutions and be a key contributor to American Express Payment Product Specifications.

In addition, as well as solving stimulating daily consultancy requests that tap into your knowledge, you will partner closely with our Global Product Certification teams to help ensure the security and interoperability of chip and mobile products (and other emerging payment products) on the American Express Network.


Are you up for the challenge?

About you?

Coming from a technical background with business knowledge and context from your experience in the card payments industry you’ll be ready to succeed and apply your expertise gained in EMV, contactless payments and NFC mobile payments.

Your ability to combine your knowledge and passion with written communication skills to add to or author documents, such as the functionally focused chip Terminal, Chipcard or Mobile Contactless specifications in support of EMVCo or Amex standards and Amex payment products will be highly valued. Any additional expertise in the EMV Level 1 communications protocols is also welcomed.

You will be both able and comfortable representing American Express at external industry forums, in particular at EMVCo, and you’ll enjoy using your excellent verbal and written communications skills in doing so.

While the role does not currently involve any software development, relevant past experience as a software developer of EMV related products would be a valuable asset in support of the in-depth ‘bits & bytes’ understanding of how EMV chip products and similar work.

Minimum Qualifications

Past Experience

6-10 years’ experience and technical expertise in:

  • EMV chip, contactless payments, NFC mobile
  • EMV POS Terminals, and Chipcard applications & certifications
  • Technical specifications, functional payments specifications writing

Technical Skills & Capabilities

Demonstrate in depth expertise in multiple of the following areas

  • EMV Level 2 protocols.
  • EMV Level 1 protocols
  • Contactless Communication Protocols
  • Host Card Emulation solutions (for NFC payments)
  • EMV Transaction processing
  • EMV Data
  • Technical Specification writing skills


  • Past experience as a software developer for one or more of the above functional areas would be a valuable asset.


  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in computer science or similar subject
