American Express Global Card Network Platform authorizes and processes all of the company’s customer card transactions. The Card Network platform is the critical back bone for all of American Express card transactions, and is a near real time low latency system that is always available and highly resilient, processing transactions from around the world 24x7, 365 days a year.

American Express is making strategic investments in new card network products and platforms to allow the company to meet its ambitious global growth agenda. American Express is looking for strong leaders and engineers to be part of high energy and efficient teams that will build and support our next generation card network systems.

 

As a Senior Engineer, you will be a hands-on engineer building highly available and scalable distributed system on the cloud that supports the company's long-term strategy and vision. Your primary responsibility is design and develop our next generation distributed transaction platform supporting Amex card transactions.

 

Key Initiatives:

  • Card Transaction Engine and Transaction Routing

  • Payment Tokenization and API platform

  • Platform Engineering and Foundational Capabilities of distributed systems

  • High Availability, Resiliency and Performance Engineering on Cloud

 

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Development of performance and scalability assessment strategies for large, complex ecosystems deployed across on-prem, cloud, hybrid landscapes with a multitude of tech stacks (3-tier, 2-tier, databases, data warehouses, web services, analytics, big data etc.)
  • Performance- profiling, tuning and identification of performance bottlenecks
  • Performance testing/ capacity planning for cloud and hybrid cloud deployments
  • Utilize performance monitoring tools like DynaTrace, NewRelic, Prometheus etc. for analysis and bottleneck identification
  • Contribute to high level design as well as detailed design of complex subsystems with emphasis in high availability and low latency.
  • Performance/Load testing using JMeter
  • Work with developers and participate in design and code reviews as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Computer Science / Information Systems degree, or equivalent with minimum 8 years of work experience

  • 5+ years of experience in performance engineering/tuning

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing and executing performance tests using JMeter scripts

  • Extensive experience in workload modeling leveraging tools/utilities like Splunk, ELK etc.

  • Performance profiling experience utilizing tools like Dynatrace, NewRelic, Prometheus etc.

  • Performance tuning experience, identification of bottlenecks, poor queries etc.

  • Basic understanding of infrastructure (physical, virtual, cloud etc.) and hardware (processor, storage, network switches, routers etc.)

  • Experience working on a variety of architectures, preferably for systems spanning a large ecosystem

  • Extensive experience in workload profiling, capacity planning, scalability analysis etc.

  • Experience leveraging performance monitoring utilities/tools

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g. Java/Python)

  • Experience writing basic SQL queries

  • Exposure to agile/SAFe software development methodology (eg. scrums etc.)

  • Experience working with tools like Maven, Git/BitBucket, Eclipse/IntelliJ IDE, Jenkins

  • Prior experience working in Unix environments

  • Exposure to continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD) software delivery model

  • Experience in cloud platforms like Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift are a plus.

  • Experience in using NoSQL databases and distributed messaging systems such as Redis, Kafka, Couchbase, Cassandra in the context of low latency and high transaction volume systems.

  • Keen awareness of concerns in massively distributed systems and effective solutions.

  • Experience working in DevOps teams and Scrums

  • Ability to learn and deep dive into new technology and business domains, question status quo and think outside of the box

  • Have excellent written and verbal communications skills.  Create and deliver effective presentations to Senior Leadership.

  • Prior experience working in financial/payment domain [Preferred]

  • Programming experience in any one language (Python, Java, GoLang etc.) [Preferred]

  • Prior exposure to BigData-based software architectures [Preferred]
