Global Treasury, a segment of the American Express Finance group, is responsible for providing a balance sheet that provides a competitive advantage for the company.   This includes managing capital to support our business; delivering cost-effective, diverse and resilient funding; and identifying, measuring and addressing financial and operational risks.

The Vice President of Global Treasury Operations (GTO) - Americas leads a large and geographically diverse 20+ person team that is responsible for the cash management functions for American Express legal entities in the US, Latin America, & Canada.

This position is important to fulfilling GTOs mission of ensuring that American Express has the right amount of money, at the right time and place, and in the right currency to fulfill its financial commitments. This role ensures all cash management transactions, including intracompany & intercompany financings, payables/receivables, debt instruments, and M&A activities are executed in a highly controlled manner adhering to all applicable American Express policies and control standards.

Outside the US, specifically in Latin America, the incumbent partners with cross-functional finance teams and business leaders, including local market country executive teams, to address a broad set of Treasury topics, challenges, and drive initiatives.

This person also plays a key role in the US partnering with American Express National Bank to ensure diligent management and monitoring of AXP’s Federal Reserve account including execution of daily inflows to or redemption of funds from the account and providing business continuity support for select bank functions.

This person will partner broadly across the Treasury organization to ensure GTO is represented in funding, liquidity, investments, capital planning, and legal entity management topics.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Leads the management of cash flow and associated processes for American Express entities across the Americas region by ensuring operating requirements are fulfilled, cost of funds is optimized, and investable funds are maximized.
  • Ensures that GTO Americas operates within a strong controlled and compliant operating environment by ensuring that processes meet or exceed regulatory, American Express policy and other relevant standards while operating with knowledge of and in consideration of the competitive framework.
  • Lead all aspects of short-term and long-term cash flow forecasting and variance reporting across material and banking legal entities in accordance with Dodd Frank Act requirements. Use machine learning and other emerging technologies that would improve forecast methodologies and output results to drive efficiencies in cash management activities.
  • Identifies business transactions that create foreign exchange exposures and coordinates to ensure exposures are appropriately hedged/cleared.
  • Leads and/or participates in Treasury initiatives in adjacent fields that involve capital, legal entity, liquidity, and regulatory oversight.
  • Designs, implements, controls and optimizes a banking/bank account structure that achieves business objectives, maximizes cash availability, and minimizes operating expense.
  • Pursues operational excellence through continuous improvement in execution, enhanced controls, intelligent process automation, and with an optimistic attitude.
  • Leads, motivates and develops a team of Treasury professionals to accomplish goals while enhancing employee engagement, development, and diversity.
  • As one of the senior members of the GTO leadership team, ensures that the group includes the people, processes, and capabilities to remain successful. Will be involved in recruitment of open team roles and also participate on committees/project teams when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Deep background and experience with process/operational management ideally including experience leading a daily operational function.

  • Knowledge of Treasury disciplines and expertise in market payment systems and processes.

  • Experience in transaction banking.

  • Ability to lead a large regional operation and collaborate across the Global Treasury Operations team and within the full Global Treasury organization.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong people leadership skills

  • Proven ability to work across all levels of the organization.

  • Proficiency in Spanish language is a plus
