We are building a banking platform that allows teams to create products at scale and allow digital channels to deliver compelling experiences in a dramatically faster fashion. As the Staff Engineer, you will be responsible for building this cutting-edge technology framework that facilitates developer productivity without compromising on quality at enterprise scale.

Our mission is to accelerate the pace of financial innovation and build new financial products for American Express. Our platform streamlines the process of launching and iterating on financial products.  

This will be a newly formed organization, that delivers key components across our banking platform. Understanding of TCP/IP protocol, different payment message types (ISO 8583 & ISO 20022), clearing messages and other value-added services are a plus.  



  • Provide hands-on technical leadership 

  • Ensure amazing developer experience for any assets that are built and delivered 

  • Balance short and long-term priorities against the business needs 

  • Advocate and influence the development on the platform 

  • Define and ensure a high level of product quality 

  • Lead and own major initiatives to extend the Digital Banking platform capabilities 

  • Build secure, robust, scalable, and performant systems for processing transactions and managing customer data. 

  • Set and maintain high standards of technical excellence across the team 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to prioritize projects and communicate changes to broader audiences 

  • Estimate project timelines, ensuring that projects you own stay on track and escalating as needed 

  • Mentor junior engineers and help hire new talent in order to build a stronger team 

  • Delivery of high performance software solutions 

  • Present performance and scale statistics of each solution 

  • Work closely with Product teams to ensure product is delivered to market on schedule 

  • Ability to work in a priority-driven environment, managing multiple and changing tasks. 

Minimum Qualifications


  • 10+ years of relevant technical experience in backend software development roles 

  • Experience leading projects from architectural design to production, while setting and maintaining high standards of technical excellence across your team 

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, and a history of working effectively with your team and cross-functional stakeholders 

  • Experience or interest in FinTech or banking systems 

  • 10+ years of Java and JEE technologies 

  • Expert at Java 8 or above and accomplished at multithreading 

  • Expert knowledge in service-oriented architecture, GraphQL, and REST services 

  • Good experience and solid knowledge of OO Design & design patterns 

  • Experience with open source frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, Vertx etc. 

  • Skilled at performance testing and JVM tuning 

  • Expertise in design and implementation of cloud native applications 

  • Familiarity with build, deploy & continuous integration tools (i.e. maven, GIT, GitHub actions, Jenkins etc.) 

  • Good experience with Java Unit Testing Frameworks and tools such as JUnit 

  • Experience with ISO standards  

  • Experience in payment processing domain. 

  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment 

  • Experience in PostgreSQL, MongoDB 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills 

  • Experience working in Linux environments and shell scripts 

  • Experience building out platforms, frameworks, serverless architecture, infrastructure and API technology
