This critical role is part of Global Commercial New Accounts Decision Science team in the Credit and Fraud Risk Organization at American Express. We are seeking a candidate with specialties in Machine Learning and Data Science to join us. The candidate will apply advanced analytics and machine learning techniques to drive commercial modeling to the next level through innovation in AI, data science and focus on customer experience. Candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end model development and implementation. Candidate will collaborate closely with internal partners like CFRC, MRMG, compliance and audit as well as effectively support regulatory interactions for underwriting

The key responsibilities include:

  1. Design, develop predictive models for new accounts using advanced statistical and Machine Learning techniques such as Gradient Boosting Machine, deep learning, and lookalike modeling
  2. R&D on Machine Learning techniques to drive commercial modeling to the next level through innovation
  3. Accelerate commercial data science by analyzing and evaluating commercial bureau assets  
  4. Conduct ongoing monitoring to ensure model data and output are within appropriate boundaries
  5. Communicate model and analytical results to critical business partners and senior leaders
  6. Work with capability and technology team for end-to-end model implementation

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Advanced degree in quantitative field related to machine learning, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, Operation Research, or a related quantitative field is required. PhD is strongly preferred
  2. Knowledge of machine learning and statistical modeling methods for supervised and unsupervised learning, understanding of underlying algorithms, ability to tune and analyze algorithms and extract actionable insights. These methods include (but not limited to) regression analysis, clustering, outlier detection, novelty detection, decision trees, collaborative filtering, nearest neighbors, support vector machines, ensemble methods and boosting, neural networks and deep learning, feature selection, and factorization methods
  3. Experience in working with raw data (including big data), have knowledge of preprocessing procedures and ability to prepare data for modeling; experience in feature engineering
  4. Master at least one popular programming language (e.g., Python/R, SQL, SAS)
  5. Strong communication skills, able to explain complex algorithm, data product and results to business partners in simple terms
  6. Ability to work in a dynamic, cross-functional environment, with a strong attention to detail
  7. Ability to work independently yet being a team player
  8. Familiarity with credit card industry and underwriting business is a plus
