American Express is embarking on an exciting transformation driven by adoption of leading edge industry solutions to enhance our capabilities in the digital marketplace. Amex’s Information Management & Digital Partnerships organization (IMDP) delivers enterprise-wide Database, Big Data, and Analytics platforms, as well as enables acquisitions, marketing, digital payments, commerce and emerging growth opportunities across business lines.
 
As VP of our Next Generation Data Management organization you will be responsible for partnering with the Unit CIO teams across the enterprise to define the data strategies needed to support LOB objectives and deliver the specific data architecture and database solutions to support business capabilities. Additionally, the VP will be responsible for transforming to the next generation data management capabilities leveraging NOSQL and open source database technology to power and accelerate data delivery in support of new digital business opportunities. Responsibilities also include advancing the automation of metadata management and database delivery activities in an agile development environment. 
 
In addition to leading a brilliant engineering team in building the enterprise’s most sophisticated products, the day to day will entail:
 
  • Delivers the data architecture, logical data models and physical databases along with necessary optimization to support Unit CIO project delivery
  • Deliver the database transformation strategy as platform strategies are implemented across the enterprise
  • Partners with Unit CIO teams to define the data strategies needed to support LOB business objectives
  • Responsible for transforming the IM platforms to leverage industry leading modern database solutions such as NOSQL and open source to provide improved delivery times and cost optimizations
  • Implements the necessary database maintenance processes to ensure effective backups and data integrity
  • Governs data standards for the enterprise
  • Integrates external vendors and off-the-shelf tools with AmEx’s internal systems to deliver comprehensive products while maximizing efficiencies
  • Leads the uplift of data management capabilities to drive scale, capacity and availability
  • Drives the optimization of data footprint and rationalization of applications
  • Provides direction for technical and business resources that actively participate in data platforms
  • Actively participates in the investment decision process by ensuring information availability for specific business opportunities where technology can enhance the value of the business
  • Supports the enterprise strategy by providing input on the alignment of product and platform blueprints
  • Drives resolution of conflicts between vendors, business leaders and technology groups
  • Reviews and oversees data management delivery in terms of schedule, cost, scope and quality
  • Proactively anticipates any risks and issues that may arise during the delivery and ensures that appropriate mitigation actions are undertaken.
  • Actively engages in resourcing processes to ensure organization agility
  • Manages talent and performance for a global team of Directors and their direct reports
  • Manages financials to organizational targets
  • Act as an architectural steward for the enterprise, defining what database products and corresponding life cycles are available for application deployment
  • Ensuring adherence to all compliance requirements across the portfolio
  • Nurturing vendor relationships to drive accountability and delivery

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with leading edge database technical knowledge to drive adoption of NOSQL and modern database solutions. Experience with leading a large global team responsible for engineering database strategy and implementations spanning mainframe and distributed platforms is a must.
 
Technical experience will include at least 10 years of professional experience in database management including:
 
  • Thorough knowledge of E2E data management process and related technologies
  • Experience with defining and implementing enterprise transformation strategies
  • Strong knowledge of Information Management emerging trends and industry acumen
  • Experience with mainframe and distributed platforms and DBMS’s
  • Understanding of database infrastructure including compute, storage, and networking
  • Experience with  RDBMS and NOSQL migration paths from traditional database based solutions
  • Strong knowledge of OLTP, OLAP, and DW/BI platforms, architecture, and infrastructure
  • Thorough understanding of database technical architecture including storage models, access methods, optimizers, replication, and consistency models.
  • Mastery of architecture knowledge used to improve end-to-end performance, scalability, availability, reliability, usability, configurability, integration and security. 
  • Advanced to expert-level knowledge of applications systems design and integration, with a detailed understanding of applicable development methodologies
  • Strong people management skills and proven ability to attract and develop top talent
  • Experience in leading Global teams and managing organization deliverables
  • Proven ability to manage relationships and communications with senior business leaders and stakeholders
  • Ability to lead, partner and drive results and transformation in a highly matrixed environment
  • Innate collaboration skills and drive to influence technology peers and business teams
  • Experience partnering with Architecture and Delivery teams to strategize and define what database platforms are needed to support application delivery
  • Effective consultative skills across multiple functions, including financial management
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing high performance solutions across the enterprise
  • Ability to install and prototype emerging technologies and manage implementation of underlying infrastructure
  • Pragmatic, results-driven approach to problem solving. Demonstrated ability to present multiple technical solutions, assess various options and make decisions with varying levels of information completeness.
