Through innovative programs like OptBlue and growing relationships with payment facilitators like Square, MSA is transforming how American Express is accepted and welcomed
The Small Merchants organization plays a critical role building unique experiences for merchants through third-party acquiring partnerships, effective client management, world-class analytics, promotions and marketing initiatives. The team is dedicated to helping small merchants succeed and grow by providing them with a range of tools and resources – lending products, online resources and discussion, digital promotions and social media tools – as well as advocacy and support. American Express provides small merchants solutions focused on enhancing merchant membership and connecting them with customers who can help build their business. This position represents an exciting opportunity to help Small Merchants profitably retain and grow a high value portfolio of over 8M merchants that collectively deliver over $200B in annual charge volume.
Specifically, this position will focus on: 
  • Ability to identify opportunities in the small merchant base by leveraging data analysis and insights
  • Build statistical models to inform our communications targeting and merchant growth forecast
  • Employ linear programming techniques to craft an optimized portfolio of growing merchants
  • Closely monitor test results and analyze what is working / not working to identify key drivers
  • Make changes to existing models and segmentation based on test results
  • Lead the conception and development of data tools / treatments that will drive merchant value and enable greater merchant engagement across channels


The successful candidate will have:  
  • 3-5 years of related work experience
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree, Masters in statistics or related quantitative field is a plus 
  • Experience with experimental test design, modeling techniques and data mining in SQL.
  • Proficient with statistical software (SAS, Python) and manipulating large data sets in Big Data environment (Teradata, Hadoop, Hive)
  • Self-starter, proactive, strategic and comfortable working in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to work through and prioritize within multiple work streams
  • Experience in leading end-to-end projects while working across multiple teams and geographies
  • Has worked close with business partners and is able to relate data insights to business goals
  • Knowledge of merchant business and data environment is a plus
