As a member of the Global Privacy Legal Team of General Counsel’s Organization of American Express, this position will involve interfacing with colleagues internationally on in-country and cross-border privacy and data protection-related legal issues, as well as working collaboratively and supporting other offices such as Privacy Compliance, Data Strategy and business organizations. This position will report to a Senior Counsel and it is based in New York.


Here’s just some of what you’ll do in this role:

  • Providing guidance on a variety of US privacy legal issues
  • Drafting, negotiating, and reviewing contracts or contractual provisions 
  • Reviewing and advising on marketing collateral and other aspects of marketing campaigns
  • Coordinating closely with the Privacy Office to review privacy legal and policy issues
  • Performing due diligence on investments and acquisitions and appropriately documenting findings
  • Researching privacy legal and factual issues on an as-needed basis
  • Special projects as assigned

Minimum qualifications:

  • JD with admission to practice law in the United States; admission to the New York Bar in good standing or eligibility to do so is preferred
  • Strong interest and/or experience in digital products and emerging technology
  • Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork and ability to influence through collaboration
  • Demonstrated experience influencing without direct authority
  • Ability to gain credibility, manage expectations, and develop strong working relationships with legal colleagues and business clients
  • Ability to convey clear advice to clients and provide proactive, creative, and business oriented solutions, to prioritize tasks and manage multiple competing projects with tight deadlines, and to work well in cross-functional team settings
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to resolve novel, complex issues with a resourceful, “can-do” attitude
  • Ability to handle multiple challenging tasks and prioritize work in a deadline-intensive environment
  • Ability to understand details of business/operational/technology environment in applying legal and policy requirements
  • Willingness and flexibility to take on new responsibilities and challenges as American Express and its businesses continue to evolve
  • Ability to gain credibility, manage expectations, and develop strong working relationships with legal colleagues and business clients
  • Ability to convey clear advice to clients and provide proactive, creative, and business oriented solutions, to prioritize tasks and manage multiple competing projects with tight deadlines, and to work well in cross-functional team settings

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2+ years of relevant privacy experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment; both legal or privacy offices would be a plus
  • CIPP/US(Certified Information Privacy Professional) accreditation is a plus
  • Experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts is a plus
  • Experience advising marketing/business teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize competing demands while maintaining high attention to detail and meeting deadlines
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both oral and written format
  • Ability to build relationships and partner with others to drive results
  • Capacity to be agile and pivot appropriately when challenged with new information or evolving circumstances

  • Workplace Flexibility: Potential to work remotely part of the time based on current projects and team needs.
