Global Infrastructure & Digital Workplace Technology – Mainframe Systems is responsible for enterprise technology infrastructure including mainframe, enterprise utilities, security infrastructure, database operations, and 3rd party hosting.
 
This role is a technical leadership role that will lead the engineering and design of American Express mainframe infrastructure hosting critical global applications. You will Lead troubleshooting, tuning and debugging of applications and critical infrastructure while helping to develop a vision and construct a technical and product roadmap that leads us beyond 2020 and into the future supporting our customers and consumers. You will assist the Mainframe organization in adopting new methods like agile and dev/ops. The Staff Engineer will report directly to the Mainframe Systems Vice President of  Architecture and Engineering. Together we will cultivate the improvement of our Mainframe Products and capabilities to help American Express stand behind our members.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering large/complex systems with a variety of components and integration points
  • Champion a modernization mindset across the infrastructure base and application stack
  • You work well with business and vendor partners to better understand their objectives, technical landscape and/or how to identify and tackle complex problems/issues
  • You lead the charge with a customer first and developer first mind set
  • You influence Infrastructure and Application Engineers and Architects to exploit new mainframe capabilities such as, Java, Swift, Go, CI / CD pipelines, Rest API, Encryption, Sysplex, Hybrid Cloud and Active/Active configurations.
  • You inspire Engineers to define solution requirements, perform coding and/or hands-on technical implementation
  • You help to lead or participate in brainstorming and discovery exercises to figure out new technologies based on research, proof of concept efforts and independent investigation
  • You ensure engineering is consistent with enterprise engineering standards, guidelines and principles
  • You actively participate in team architecture and engineering discussions and forums as a prominent contributor
  • You utilize your technical expertise in creative ways to help team members overcome technical problems during production outages and solution delivery
  • Ensures compliance with technical, architectural, regulatory, and strategic standards, policies, and procedures
  • Routinely mentoring engineers on related domain expertise
  • You are comfortable challenging the status quo and blazing new trails in pursuit of the best user and developer experience

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • 10+ years engineering experience in a complex mainframe environment in the Financial Services industry
  • Experience with design and implementation of mainframe and distributed applications
  • Experience with mainframe infrastructure, z-platform and z/OS technologies hardware and operating systems, application development and control of mainframe architecture, middleware and tooling
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with modern mainframe technologies such as Java, Encryption, Hybrid Cloud, Sysplex, High Availability and Active/Active.
  • Experience with in depth problem solving, analytical analysis, reporting and presentation to senior leaders and key partners
  • Strong industry knowledge of newest technologies and its relevance to the American Express environment
  • Deep subject matter domain expertise and knowledge of application processes and business flows
  • Ability to lead, influence and drive vendor direction to deliver innovated solutions that are helpful to American Express
  • Tried exemplary personal integrity and ability to build trust and collaborate across an organization
  • Ability to motivate and inspire team members to deliver on commitments
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in written and various media with many different consumers and partners
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Tried experience attracting, hiring, retaining and leading top engineering and architect talent and building high performing teams in a highly competitive market
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, or significant experience
