Job Description

The Global Commercial Services (GCS) Controllership team supports GCS business area and its respective Finance partners on a wide variety of accounting issues.  The successful candidate will provide direction and support to the standardization of American Express’ deal protocols and processes on GCS product-based projects, especially in the B2B space.
 Primary Responsibilities of this role will include, but are not limited to:
  • Supporting business growth activities (new/renewed client contracts, product launches, pricing, system enhancements, etc.) through activities such as reviewing business contracts and advising Business partners and LFOs on accounting impacts and remediation.
  • Providing accounting and reporting requirements in all stages of product development.
  • Ensuring proper set up of ledgers, associated accounts and documentation around accounting for deals and new products.
  • Ensuring proper accounting treatment for client incentives, signing bonuses, and other financial incentives offered to GCS clients.
 
The candidate will support cross-functional initiatives with the aim of strengthening Controllership’s engagement with business partners.  The candidate will actively collaborate with Controllership and other Finance and Pricing teams across various lines of business to learn the importance of ensuring that all new product and deal activities have reliable financial controls and are consistent with best practices.

Candidates should have a working knowledge of US GAAP, familiarity with reading and understanding contracts, and a good understanding of AXP’s business practices including corporate card products and client incentives.  Finally, knowledge of American Express financial systems, operational accounting, internal controls, accounting policies and overall AXP business acumen are important for this role.

Qualifications

 
  • 5+ years experience in Accounting or Finance, knowledge of new Revenue Standard, CPA Preferred
  • Bachelors degree required, Accounting or Finance preferred
  • Knowledge of Financial Services industry preferred
  • SOX, Operational Risk and/or Audit experience preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality and accuracy
  • Proven demonstration of personal excellence
  • Ability to process information and apply concepts to similar scenarios
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team 
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Works well in a changing environment and with tight deadlines
