The Conversational Intelligence team is responsible for the platform strategy, architecture, and engineering of conversational and messaging technologies and integrations with Digital Partners in Social Media, Retail and Service Industries at American Express. You will be focused on driving the architecture and engineering direction of the Conversational Intelligence platform which uses artificial intelligence, natural language processing and contextual inference to create conversational experiences that help our customers across voice, text, touch and other modalities on IOT devices and personal assistants including web, mobile chat, Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple business chat and Facebook Messenger. This is a critical engineering position given the complex infrastructure and global scale of the platform which supports partners across multiple business lines of American Express.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Analyze user stories and problems to develop technical architecture and solutions for new and existing platforms and providing architectural mentorship and oversight
  • Build common frameworks and reusable assets using Open Source and proprietary software
  • Conducts code reviews and builds test automation
  • Work with other senior level engineers, architects and platform owner to help set the platforms’ technical direction and strategic objectives
  • Conduct hands-on research and complex investigations across complex delivery efforts
  • Build working prototypes to validate proposed solutions and minimize risk associated with delivery efforts
  • Solve novel problems that impact products and/or technologies
  • Design new techniques, methodologies, and concepts for solving broad cross-cutting initiatives
  • Perform reviews and provide oversight across various delivery teams to ensure alignment with architectural and technical strategy
  • Reviews others' systems designs to ensure selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources, and integration of multiple systems and technology
  • Drive key architecture decisions to solve critical, complex problems for core and adjacent platforms
  • Network with peers on technical matters, design prototypes, system designs and enterprise-wide research projects
  • Work with senior architects to drive reuse and simplify complexity
  • Combine in-depth specialty area(s) with broad knowledge of other disciplines to deliver coherent end-to-end architectural mentorship
  • Focus on driving architecture towards long-term Business Unit/Enterprise goals and objectives


Are you up for the challenge?

  • 7+ years of active architecture, design, engineering, and implementation experience in a complex enterprise environment
  • Hands-on experience with technology/frameworks such as Java/J2EE/Spring/vert.x, React, JavaScript & CSS/HTML.
  • Hands-on experience in the development of enterprise-grade RESTful APIs using Micro services architectural style
  • Ability to setup CD/CI pipeline using Git/Jenkins & ability to containerize applications using Docker
  • Ability to plan, define and communicate executable technology strategies
  • Shown ability to transform business requirements into high quality technology solutions
  • Successful design, creation and deployment of one or more enterprise-grade technology products
  • Proven expertise in designing highly available, fault-tolerant, scalable solution architectures
  • Ability to participate in the prevention, diagnosis, and resolution of system outages as an authority in the underlying architecture
  • Solution architecture skills with wide-ranging experience; able to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field
  • Experience building cloud native/serverless applications preferred
