Business Unit

American Express Travel & Lifestyle Services (TLS) is a global business unit at American Express that delivers consumer travel and lifestyle services and benefits to Card Members. TLS plays an important role in overall Card product engagement, loyalty and satisfaction in addition to driving direct travel revenue and cost savings. Pivoting from a call center model to a digital servicing model is a strategic focus area for TLS in 2018 and beyond.

 

Team

The Global Customer Experience & Digital Platforms team leads our pivot to a digital servicing model, combining online and offline assets to deliver a global best-in-class, omni-channel Travel and Lifestyle product. With a deep technical understanding of the point-of-departure and a pulse for digital standards and trends, we are developing and executing a strategic vision that is aspirational yet realistic. The Business Architect will be a critical stakeholder on a cross-TLS team tasked with designing the TLS overall customer experience.

 

He/She will be directly responsible for leading the strategy and execution of associated work within the “offline” capabilities, as well leading relevant technical convergence strategies that connect the “offline” and “online” channels – both in areas of direct capability ownership and those that will require influence of key partners (e.g., Expedia, iSeatz, Sabre etc.). He/She will work with senior business and technology leaders to understand, guide and document the business principles, goals and strategic drivers of TLS and the Blue Box and thereby ensure technology investments are aligned with priority product strategies and business capability needs.

Qualifications

Required skills

 

Significant experience in an active business architecture role in a professional environment and/or comparable experience such as:

  • Extensive platform and business integration experience with authoritative understanding of core architectural concepts (business, data, application, technical and solution), issues and trends
  • Extensive relevant work experience in project management, process management, and business systems analysis at an enterprise-level, as well as direct experience with high-level system architecture design.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent work experience required Applicable industry certification (TOGAF, BAIP, etc.)
  • Demonstrates consulting skills and ability to influence at the SVP and “C’ level across BU’s, Portfolios, and Platforms - able to influence all levels of the organization and across Business Units, Portfolios, and Platforms
  • Recognized authority with strong, in-depth SME knowledge of assigned scope as well as other key linkage areas across the company
  • Tremendous communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to own and drive TLS level service blue prints, roadmaps and assigned initiatives
  • Able to work with delivery teams on architectural approach used for capability enablement – familiar with relevant tech stack and integration points
  • Clear ownership of business architecture modelling within the Organization, Functional/Service Capability, Business Process, Business Data/Information, and Geographical Context
  • Drives the business strategy definition through to Technology platform strategy definition and architectural approach
  • Works with senior business leaders to understand and document the business principles, goals and strategic drivers of the organization
  • Partners with Chief Technology/Architect Office to lead the establishment and progression of an enterprise architectural framework
  • Routinely undertakes mentoring, coaching and guidance activities with the business and technical communities to promote best practices in architecture
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge across multiple business and technical environments, covering a wide-range of business functions and capabilities
  • Leads the baseline and target business architecture, which includes description of the of the business product and/or service strategy, the business environment, the business architecture gaps, and both functional and non-functional business requirements
  • Ensures platform and product strategy, vision and roadmaps do not collide with other platforms or products – drives resolution with platform and product owners when necessary
  • Undertakes business architecture modelling of Organization or Functional/Service Capability, including support of all business process re-engineering efforts in close collaboration with senior leadership
  • Works with senior business leaders to understand and document the business principles, goals and strategic drivers of the organization

 

Functional skills

  • Experienced to Mastery-level of Business Architecture practices, with a deep understanding of its relationship to and integration with other architecture disciplines, including Information Architecture, Application Architecture and Technical Architecture.
  • Experienced to Mastery-level analysis, facilitation and influence skills
  • Experienced level understanding of travel industry and digital solutions in a product-centric environment
  • Experienced to Mastery-level knowledge across multiple business and technical environments, covering a wide range of business products, functions, capabilities and technology platforms
  • Experience to Mastery-level knowledge of Product Delivery vehicles and best practices, such as Design Thinking, Lean and Agile
  • Ability to independently drive enterprise-wide initiatives
  • Large-scale process reengineering knowledge and experience (Six-Ligma, LEAN, etc.)
  • Fully integrated understanding of data, application, technical and solution architecture practices and ability to understand and provide traceability of business capabilities from strategic inception all the way through technical implementation
  • Expertise in relevant industry standard Modelling Languages and Tools (UML [both Structural and Behavioural views], BPMN, BPEL, etc.)
