The Digital Acquisition Experience technology organization at American Express is looking for a software engineer with a deep focus on backend web systems to help us modernize and globalize our software platform. We build the core technology capabilities and user experiences that enable the journey of a prospective customer of American Express across web, mobile and voice channels.


In this role, you will use your deep knowledge of web architecture and masterful software development expertise to drive key delivery projects as a hands-on contributor. In addition, you will serve as our backend "chapter" lead, setting our server-side technical strategy, ensuring a high level of training and expertise for our backend-focused technical staff, and collaborating extensively with our enterprise frameworks and capabilities teams.


If you were to join our team, these are the kinds of things you'd do:

  • Collaborate with software and data architects to design the next generation of our server-side software platform
  • Work in a multi-functional team with other engineers to design, build, test and deploy software systems
  • Develop frameworks and approaches for measuring and testing availability, performance and correctness of our platform components
  • Review colleagues' code with an eye toward performance, reliability and maintainability
  • Help our production support team address issues encountered in production and fix defects when discovered
  • Lead the evaluation and selection of technologies for backend systems engineering
  • Build a passionate, high-energy community of backend developers across the organization
  • Develop consistent practices and tooling for server-side engineering and lead their adoption by all backend teams
  • Continuously learn about new technologies and keep us abreast of industry developments
  • Mentor other engineers and be mentored in turn


Requirements for this position:

  • 12+ years of software development experience in multiple project environments
  • Deep understanding of the elements of modern full-stack web architectures, including single page applications, web security, microservices, functions-as-a-service, event-driven architecture, job scheduling, relational and non-relational database systems, and streaming and distributed data processing
  • Significant hands-on experience with multiple server-side programming languages and paradigms, including object-oriented and functional programming, languages that target the Java Virtual Machine, and andand at least one scripting language such as Python or Ruby
  • Familiarity with standard software engineering practices like source code control, code review, and continuous integration and delivery
  • Working knowledge of Unix system and shell programming

Also critical to your success:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Familiarity with and desire to work using agile methodologies and practices such as Scrum/Kanban, iterations, user stories and development flows using continuous delivery, and automated testing
  • Dedication to staying up-to-date with the latest web architecture technology including language innovations, containerization, storage technology and runtime problem solving
  • The ability to see and to understand the larger context in which your team works and to craft solutions within that context
  • Flexibility to changes in product requirements, organizational structures and business conditions
  • A strong belief in your personal responsibility for ensuring quality craftsmanship
  • An open, collaborative spirit
