The Marketing Technology & Insights organization leads the technology strategy and delivery of marketing capabilities, products and customer value streams within American Express. This team leads the delivery of capabilities that enable incredible digital experiences for American Express Consumer, Merchant, Small Business & Corporate customers globally.


This exciting Staff Engineer position will be part of the transformation journey supporting Marketing Technology & Insights organization, within American Express Technologies (AET). Our Staff Engineers have both deep technical and strategic knowledge that drive superior solutions. It takes a highly skilled and dedicated leader to drive change and deliver outcomes. Here’s some of what you’ll be doing:

  • Work with engineers and architects to define solution requirements and technical implementation approach for all initiatives and products.
  • Introduces new engineering paradigms, techniques and solutions.
  • Implement new, highly scalable products, platform components and APIs.
  • Drive both high-level and detailed technical designs and conduct design reviews.
  • Actively participate in team and company-wide architecture and engineering discussions and forums.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly.
  • Be a change agent and willing to challenge status quo while helping to drive the necessary changes.
  • Lead engineering teams in developing frameworks and implementing solutions related to the enterprise Marketing platform
  • Perform rapid POCs to experiment and build rails for the engineering team around Big Data technologies
  • Actively participate in team and platform-wide architecture and engineering discussions.
  • Mentor engineers and system architects to ensure technology complexities are understood very clearly to implement Big Data solutions expeditiously with high quality
  • Hands-on coding, delivery and strategy/blueprint development


  • 10+ years of hand-on engineering experience building complex products and deployment of large scale products in an agile product development environment.
  • Advanced Hands-on engineering skills with wide-ranging experience; able to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly.
  • Ability to influence across at all levels without authority
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing technical professionals.
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing big data solutions.
  • SAS or data warehouse experience is a plus.
  • Hands-on coding experience in the following technology environment - Angular, Node.Js, REST based APIs, Java, Couchbase, AWS, .NET, Apache Spark, Hadoop, Hive, Scala, Kafka
  • Ability to construct enterprise-grade APIs using state-of-the-art techniques and best practices (REST, JSON, XML, etc.).
  • Strong written, verbal communications, presentation skills, leadership, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of Amex Customer data and Marketing domain is a plus
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, or related field required; Advanced Degree preferred.
