Job Description
The Global Consumer Services Technologies (GCST) team is responsible for implementing and supporting systems for the consumer and commercial card businesses in the US. A substantial program of work is underway within GCST to create products for US and international consumers, and to refresh existing products to make them more compelling for customers.
 
We are seeking an experienced Technical Project Manager with a strong technology background to join our team in New York. As a Technical Project Manager, we’ll put your leadership skills to work helping individuals and teams accelerate delivery and speed to market our unique card products and services by understanding, using and mastering Scrum.
 
This Technical Project Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating strategic new product launches/initiatives within our Global Consumer Services Technology from definition through implementation, and has the following responsibilities: 
  • Manages integrated teams to deliver technology solutions in support of key product initiatives by working closely with product managers, technical project managers, architects, engineers, and QA teams
  • Works within and across business units to prioritize, plan, and execute the development schedule for major product releases
  • Manages and tracks status, financials, and other KPIs in relation to the plan and published progress reports
  • Assigns development resources to activities and monitors progress, performance across resource channels
  • Maintains dependency plan between planned sprints/work-streams across American Express Technologies (AET) development teams, infrastructure, external partners and third parties
  • Manages and escalates risks, issues, and changes tied to the product development initiatives
  • Applies judgment and discretion on when to raise issues versus work through issues with the team
  • Resolves issues precluding engineers from making progress against plans and deadlines
  • Ensures deliverables across technology teams are high-quality and clearly documented
  • Conducts Pre-PI Planning sessions, daily stand-ups and retrospectives at the end of each planned unit of work, Scrum of Scrums, and ensures that the team is continuously learning from the past 
  • Identifies opportunities to adopt innovative technologies and processes

Qualifications

Qualifications
This highly energetic Technical Project Manager must have: 
  • 10+ years of IT experience with 5+ years of project management experience managing medium to large software development projects
  • Deep understanding of all aspects of software design with a demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility and ownership
  • End-to-end project/program management and delivery experience is required
  • Experience understanding technology solutions at an enterprise-level is preferred
  • Experience managing Agile, Scrum, or other rapid application development teams to deliver technology solutions on time, on budget, and to the scope
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate across third parties and technical and business product managers
  • Experience in clarifying objectives, dealing with ambiguity/under-defined problems, advocating for simplification, and influencing teams
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies
  • Passion to enable business capabilities through innovation
  • Knowledge and working experience of Amex internal core platforms, systems and SORs is a plus
  • BS or MS degree in computer science, computer engineering, or other technical discipline is preferred
  • PMI or equivalent project management certification is a plus
  • Scrum Master certification is a plus
Certification(s) in SAFe framework of Agile practices is a plus
