Our Global Consumer Services Group (GCSG) Investment Optimization team is tasked with overseeing the allocation of $2B+ annually to marketing campaigns to acquire new customers and cross-sell to existing customers. Using a unique mix of data, analytics and financial modelling, we’re working intelligently to drive an always-improving allocation of funds.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Director to push the boundaries for even smarter investment decisions. In our Investment Optimization team, you will help make robust investment decisions, enhance and champion our decision logic, and develop a best-in-class framework for reviewing investments and tracking performance. This role will require strong partnership with highly motivated colleagues in Phoenix, NY and London.

This role has tremendous impact – directly influencing how over $2B+ of investment dollars are allocated. This is not a business-as-usual role and will require the successful candidate to collaborate across the company to tackle intellectual challenges and invent tools and frameworks for the future.

In this highly analytical role, you will lead a highly motivated team focused on Modelling, Analytics and Digital Investments:

Modelling:
  • Own the GCSG CMV & ROI Framework and partner with marketing, product, risk, and finance colleagues to ensure clear understanding and continuous improvement of framework and inputs such as behavioral and financial assumptions
  • Work with colleagues in Corporate Planning & Analysis and Business CFO Group to ensure CMV & ROI Framework alignment across AXP Business Units
  • Support CMV Framework governance & compliance exercises in partnership with the Risk organization
  • Maintain an aligned, clear and robust investment optimization logic and drive towards a fully-automated multi factor/constraint optimization logic leveraging computer algorithms (built in R, Python or similar)
  • Run ad-hoc investment allocation simulations and scenarios and embed identified best practices back into CMV & ROI Framework and optimization logic
  • Partner across the organization to integrate financial valuation (NPV / ROI) logic into marketing execution and decision tools
Analytics:
  • Track GCSG investment performance by leveraging existing IDN / Cornerstone reports and building custom reports that address senior leadership needs
  • Develop performance tracking framework and infrastructure in partnership with analytics teams
  • Build and drive usage/adoption of advanced IO analytics & tools leveraging IO TM1 reporting
  • Drive adoption, understanding and usage across broader GCSG IO team of most appropriate and effective data extraction (SAS, Hive, SQL, etc.), manipulation (Python, Excel, etc.) and visualization (Tableau, Cognos BI, QlikView, etc.) tools
Digital Investments:
  • Partner with Enterprise Digital & Analytics (EDA) and Amex Digital Labs to drive efficient growth in digital acquisition channels
  •  Ensure EDA and Labs investment priorities are understood, efficiently optimized and funded in a timely manner
  • Build expertise around performance assessment, including attribution of digital investments
  • Grow the pool of investment ideas by working with business partners and LFO teams to define incremental opportunities
  • Keep up-to-date and distribute across organization knowledge of the fast-evolving digital marketing ecosystem
  • Partner with the rest of GCSG IO to streamline existing IO processes, continue evolving IO TM1 platform and provide support for core I/O process when needed (LRP / Plan / Refreshes, monthly R&Os, unfunded, TUFI tracking, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated thought leadership, creativity and resourcefulness in generating pragmatic solutions
  • Intellectual curiosity and keen interest in driving innovation and change
  • Strong knowledge of valuation concepts / frameworks and financial return metrics
  • Ability to break down complex ideas into understandable and actionable messages
  • Strong technical and analytical skills acquired through usage of data extraction, manipulation and visualization tools in prior roles
  • Experience building reports, dashboards and tools used to drive business decisions
  • Solid understanding and interest in digital / online marketing
  • Strong communication, relationship-building and people leadership skills
  • Proven ability to drive timely results, generate ideas and prioritize deliverables
  • Tertiary degree (Masters / PhD) desired or equivalent in business, economics, finance or quantitative science. Professional qualifications will be considered.
