Global Network Services & Transformation (GNS&T) is a new team tasked with envisioning the American Express payments network of the future and executing the cross-functional transformation necessary to deliver it.  By taking the lead on this strategic imperative for the company, this global team is looking to define and deliver new services and capabilities to drive business differentiation, growth, and a digital global payments network that enables rapid innovation. A Network Modernization (NeMo) Program team has been established to implement a full-scale modernization of the American Express Global Network over the next three years.  NeMo will rebuild the American Express Network from the ground up and is focused on delivering a truly digital global payments network that is agile and ready for rapid innovation. The NeMo Program has been approved for a significant investment.


The program governance structure & processes, delivery management structure, centralized Program Office operating model, and reporting processes have been recently re-designed and enhanced to drive strong collaboration, effective decision-making, transparency, and efficiency.  The program consists of approximately 400 GNS&T and Technology resources and aims to forge partnerships across the business and technology.


Specifically, the NeMo Program Office will manage program governance processes and provide an objective view of delivery status, including risks / issues, changes and major decisions to the leadership team. It will seek to drive collaboration, establish clear leadership, minimize disruption and institutionalize governance. Each role within the Program Office will enable each of these objectives.


The Business Case & Benefits Realization Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining the business case for the NeMo Program, including proposed new capabilities from the GNS Strategy team.


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Develop an infrastructure business case reflecting the benefits to be realized by decommissioning the current network infrastructure support costs (POD) and replacing it with the modernized network infrastructure and support costs (POA).  This will include calculating the infrastructure bubble costs based on initial build and planned decommission dates
  • Developing a business case and benefit estimation for all incremental NeMo strategic initiatives and capabilities; Track value streams
  • Observe financial trends within NeMo’s expenditure and within workstream budgets to control spending where possible and adjust budgets as needed
  • Estimate future financial needs that must be accounted for in order to achieve NeMo goals
  • Analyze NeMo budget trends to-date, organizational data, and financial developments that may impact NeMo’s budgetary direction within the three-year roadmap
  • Reconcile financial reporting with finance tools
  • Assess variance and expected spend to ensure funding for delivering against program scope
  • Assess impact of funding changes and communicate perceived impact to program leadership
  • Monitor and track workstream spend by impacts to scope due to determinations made with risks / issues, decisions and / or change requests with scope and cost implications
  • Review workstream financial proposals for accuracy and compliance with laws, regulations, and broader organizational compliance
  • Communicate recommendations / observations to NeMo delivery leadership and program sponsors through expenditure reports
  • Highlight recommended changes, as appropriate, to reconcile differences between the approved budget and actual spending
  • Consolidate and summarize budget recommendations for each budget cycle as required at the NeMo program-level
  • Assist with compiling and maintaining data to support budget analysis efforts
  • Manage day-to-day activities as related to specific budget areas such as workstream spend, scope changes, resource changes and vendor management
  • Serve as the NeMo program liaison and resource to the workstreams regarding financial data and proper budget procedures and practices.  Assist in resolving related problems
  • Prepare program cost analysis with recommendations to management for final decision-making
  • Participate in multiple, high-priority and confidential projects as assigned by the Delivery Leads


  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or a similar subject; master’s degree in similar fields preferred.  A focus on statistics, mathematics and finance is beneficial
  • 5+ years of experience in a finance-based role
  • Familiarity with Scaled Agile methodology preferred
  • High-level of flexibility with the ability to absorb new information and adapt to change quickly
  • Strong numerical abilities and capacity for analyzing data and numbers, with a particular attention to budget management necessary
  • Proven computer skills – from data mining to creating reports and spreadsheets
  • Strong attention to detail and an ability to spot discrepancies in information
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving style
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Team player, comfortable to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, within a cross-border, remote team environment
  • Comfortable working in an ambiguous and fluid environment with competing priorities and needs
  • Ability to work independently and interact effectively with at all organizational levels
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and tasks independently/with minimal supervision
  • Motivated self-starter
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
