Job Responsibilities:

The SPS JAPA Product Owner is responsible for the development, support & maintenance of the SPS JAPA application and the generation of monthly performance reporting for the Global Commercial Services (GCS) organization across the Japan, Asia Pacific and Australia (JAPA) region. 

Key accountabilities include:

SPS Product Management
  • Adept in end-to-end development of functional & technical solutions for the monthly performance reporting suite for the region
  • Participate in status and strategy meetings with business users to drive alignment between all parties on development priorities and timelines
  • Work with business users and technologies to translate business requirements into actionable requests using the agile process:
  • Creation of features and user stories
  • Monitoring the progress of each user story from development to UAT
  • Coordinating the UAT process; conducting first level testing, supporting business user testing process 
  • Providing final sign-off on all development requests and seeing changes through to production 
SPS Production Support
  • Production of the Prelim and Final Monthly Performance Reporting Suite for Corporate Payments:
  • Running the monthly dataset refresh process including GDR Refresh, Sales Hierarchy Changes, the Portfolio Segmentation process, etc.
  • Conducting quality checks on dataset outputs
  • Creation of front end report templates
  • Publishing reports on the SPS Portal
  • Extracting and transforming data based on user requirements, performing analysis spanning all markets and channels in the region and providing insights and recommendations as required
  • Performing root cause analysis on current production codes, identifying and developing code changes to resolve issues and working with the Production Support team to raise new code into production
  • Monitoring and analysing the performance of potential bottleneck issues and working with relevant teams to implement end to end production fixes
  • Sharing technical knowledge including on boarding of new members. Collaborating and communicating with key stakeholders:
  • DS&I JAPA & GBS colleagues
  • Business planners and analysts
  • SPS Production Support team and other upstream teams e.g. OneForce, GDR, IRI etc.
  • Handling ad-hoc requests for creating new SAS reports, updating backend tables, modifying SAS portlets and creating ad-hoc Enterprise Guide (EG) projects 
Reporting / Capabilities Development
  • Developing new reporting capabilities and data management processes including:
  • GCS Merchant datasets feeding consolidated reporting suites
  • Tableau back end dataset and monthly refresh 
  • Sales productivity reporting
  • Customer Needs reporting
  • Act as a back-up support for the monthly SBS JAPA report production process 
  • Provide guidance on business partner queries
  • Ensuring compliance to American Express Information Security Standards.


  • Advanced knowledge and experience in SAS Coding and SAS tools: SAS EG, SAS SMC, SAS Portal and Platform Manager
  • SAS expertise in a UNIX environment
  • Five plus years’ reporting & analysis experience required
  • Proactive, self-starter with excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Must have a proven track record of driving projects from conception through implementation.
  • A good balance of technical knowledge and business acumen with a proven track record of driving data innovation and business metrics with a customer-first mindset.
  • An established background in launching software or services in partnership with engineering teams and high degree of proficiency in prototyping, iterative development and an understanding of agile methodologies.
