We are seeking a qualified lawyer to join American Express’ Central Legal team which provides legal support on a range of digital, payments and other centrally-managed areas within American Express. The Central Legal team covers a broad range of legal and business areas, with a strong emphasis of supporting new and innovative digital capabilities and experiences, payment innovations and partnerships. We also support centralised product development, issue management and multi-jurisdictional coordination for consumer and B2B payments, lending and servicing.


This is a broad and challenging role that will allow the successful candidate to utilise their legal expertise, business knowledge, leadership skills, curiosity and passion to help the legal team drive and support the strategic agenda for American Express and its vision of providing the best customer experiences every day.


The successful candidate will have an opportunity to cover digital, payments and generalist legal work, working in close cooperation with other members of the legal team in the UK and globally. The Central Legal team has team members in several countries and we have a heavy emphasis on multi-jurisdictional and global work.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordination of multi-jurisdictional projects and programs for the legal team and critical American Express business divisions including:  Enterprise Digital & Analytics, Amex Digital Labs, Global Consumer Services and Global Servicing.

  • Advice and support for product development including drafting of user terms, reviewing digital user experiences (mobile app, interactive voice, chat and web channels), digital marketing capabilities and processes, the application of new technologies to payments, lending and customer servicing activities.

  • Contract and partnerships work, including supporting acquisitions, strategic alliances and other transactions.

  • Take a lead role in monitoring trends, industry and regulatory developments, including in respect of Open Banking, Future of Payments, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Wearables, IoT, digital payments, marketing and personalisation.

  • Help coordinate, manage and run legal team ‘centres of excellence’, cross-regional groups and initiatives such as the International Digital Team and Consumer Lawyers Forum including hosting meetings and creating a pipeline of content.

  • Support training and development initiatives for legal and business teams, especially in matters of digital fluency.

  • Generally, to ensure American Express understands and complies with legal and regulatory requirements and effectively manages legal and brand risks.

  • Support management of outside counsel, including budgets management with the aim to ensure that the company receives cost effective legal advice.

  • In addition to the above the position holder will be required to perform other duties as assigned by the manager from time to time. Some international travel may be required.

Required skills:

  • A lawyer qualified in the UK, the EU or a common law jurisdiction (and if not already qualified in the UK, a willingness to do so), ideally with relevant professional experience at a reputable law firm, a regulator, an international company or a company in relevant sector (e.g. payments, banking, lending, marketing, advertising, technology or fintech).

  • Fluent in English. An additional language would be a plus.

  • Core legal professional skills in drafting, legal research and analysis, providing legal advice, communication and negotiation.

  • Proven ability to apply law to commercial practice, the ability to make pragmatic judgments and to be able to identify, assess and quantify ‘real-world’ legal and regulatory risk and help business partners navigate those risks to ensure strong commercial outcomes.

  • Familiarity with regulation impacting cards, payments, banking or financial services generally, marketing, privacy or data protection would be a plus.

  • Industry knowledge and prior experience in dealing with mobile apps, payment wallets, digital marketing and customer acquisition, digital product development, fintech, Artificial Intelligence and/or Open Banking would be a plus.

  • Credibility and presence – comfortable taking the lead and making appropriate recommendations to middle and – if required – senior management.

  • Excellent relationship management and people skills – ability to adapt communication style to a broad mix of people and personalities. Ability to form and maintain strong working relationships.

  • Willingness to develop – a desire to grow, develop and to leverage experience gained in this position to expand skill set for future career growth at American Express.

  • Innovation mindset – always looking for how to improve or evolve, whether it is how in-house legal services are delivered, how we learn or how we can improve a customer experience or product.
