This is a great opportunity to join the Authorizations & Secure File Transfer Technology organization and be part of a journey to transform, and support, one of the most critical platforms within American Express.
Authorizations (CAS) is the companys' core highly available platform managing secure, reliable commerce between American Express Card Members and its partners.  Authorizations is the 'Heartbeat of American Express' delivering a critical set of capabilities to our business and its customers, which is at the very core of nearly all business processes in the company today.
Some of the key traits we are looking for: deep technical engineering expertise, wide distributed and mainframe systems and applications knowledge, proven experience with engineering and supporting enterprise wide high availability platforms; set, drive and deliver technical goals, make bold decisions and have the tenacity to deliver on the vision. The candidate demonstrates clear examples of experience in all aspects of managing, designing, engineering and operationally maintaining a critical “always on” application platforms. Ideally this candidate would have experience building such applications in their career history while demonstrating strong knowledge of systems security, file transfer protocols, TCPIP networking, firewalls, load balancing, databases and Java based application development and support.
Purpose of the Role:
Responsibilities:
• Drive technical projects with a range of engineering teams to build, design, implement and maintain some of the most diverse scalable platform constructs for a core application at the heart of the company
• Provide leadership and mentorship of teams and manage collaboration with cross-functional engineering & product teams to streamline and improve adoption of the Authorizations platforms
• Deliver software supporting very high transaction volume and very low latencies, while providing 5+ nines of system availability
• Have ability to cultivate R&D, innovation, technology step changes and new technology adoption
• Hands on with Java software code, RHEL distributed and mainframe (TPF as a bonus) infrastructure and technical architecture experience
•Ensures their teams successfully develop, deploy, support, and monitor software across various environments
• Delivering software solutions that meet or exceed customer and partner expectations by developing and driving innovation and experimentation within Technology
• Able to share technology domain expertise with architects and other specialists across multiple organizations
• Empower teams to succeed at scale
• Set goals, strategies, capacity, and oversee deployment of large-scale projects across the platform
• Promote, empower, and practice servant leadership
• Cultivate an environment of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics
• Recruit and cultivate top talent by driving technical and leadership development
• Collaborate with a wide variety to partners within business and technology teams motivate change required to execute product roadmaps
• Coach, guide, and promote creation of high quality, clearly documented, and compliant work across engineering teams
• Ensure alignment of strategy, architecture, tools/methods with software engineers and architects to execute product roadmaps
• Ensures automated CI/CD pipeline and a production environment that scales to meet anticipated demand
• Lead multiple agile software product development teams that realize the company’s technology vision and strategy in a scalable, iterative environment
• Collaborates with peers and partners to drive software solutions that align to strategic roadmaps, prioritized initiatives and strategic technology directions, and contributes to engineering best practices across the company.

Qualifications

Past Experience:
• 10+ years of experience leading software engineering and/or operational support teams
• Extensive hands-on experience building and being responsible for the development and support of complex, large scale enterprise applications and products that require a deep understanding of application logic and dependencies
• Proven experience attracting, hiring, retaining and leading top engineering talent
• Experience with Scrum, Kanban, or another Agile application development methodology
 
Academic Background:
• Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, computer science engineering, or related experience required; advanced degree preferred
Masters degree preferred
Functional Skills/Capabilities:
• Coach, guide and promote the creation of high quality, clearly documented, and compliant software across engineering teams
• Enable integrated teams to deliver software and hardware solutions in support of key product initiatives
• Collaborate within and across business units to design solutions and prioritize, plan, and execute the development schedule
