International Consumer Services (ICS) is primarily responsible for the marketing of consumer card products and benefits, and the acquisition of American Express consumers in our international markets. 


ICS Operational Excellence aims to ensure that ICS has a robust first line of defence, playing an active role in supporting the Business to meet its business objectives and demonstrating an effective control framework. ICS Operational Excellence achieves this through: 

  • Ensuring ICS can demonstrate robust first line controls and appropriate BST across key processes, new products & capabilities, third party relationships and other significant change

  • Ensuring business leaders are accountable for and have clear understanding of control expectations, are kept informed of key priorities, and receive prompt and actionable escalation of material risks and issues

  • Partnering with stakeholders (risk SMEs & 2nd line) to streamline and improve control processes, to enable faster time to market and appropriate balance of risk, control & enablement

  • Ensuring the ICS Operational Excellence team is informed, empowered and enabled to deliver on our objectives, as well as creating a positive and energised team environment.

Individual Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director of Process Assurance in ICS Operational Excellence, this role will include:

  • Key ICS contact and manager for a sales incentive project covering 6 markets. Contribution to all workstreams and leading a workstream on ‘Incentive Processes and Quality Control’ and ‘Change Management’.

  • Data driven analysis complemented by qualitative insights to develop robust monitoring and controls including for areas such as sales incentives and conduct risk.

  • Build and leverage relations to ‘connect the dots’ across ICS process assurance by engaging and supporting colleagues working in marketing excellence, audit management, business self testing and process risk self assurance.

  • Collaborating extensively with key stakeholders within ICS OE and with other partners and stakeholders including process owners, senior leaders,  Compliance, Risk, MIS, Operational Risk Governance, Audit, Legal, EMPS (Marketing) as well as other OE teams.

  • Identifying opportunities, issues, process gaps within process assurance processes and ensuring these are appropriately mitigated or fixed.

  • Working with automation SMEs to develop opportunities for smart monitoring (automated testing) and robotics.

  • Carrying out activities that support ICS in assessing, mitigating and accepting risk; ensuring issues and risks are managed proactively in an efficient and effective way with root causes identified and addressed. Developing strategies for appropriate risk management and due diligence.

  • Contributing to a governance framework which balances the support of strong business growth with managing appropriate risk levels.

This role will be located in Brighton, UK.

Required skills:

  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with experience of engaging with and presenting to senior management

  • Strong data analysis skills, including the ability to understand complex data and synthesize information efficiently to form cohesive value-added insights.  Confident at using data to 'tell a story'.

  • Experience as a Project Manager managing high profile project or project stream from conception to delivery.

  • Strong organization skills including multitasking and time management.

  • Experience of working with geographically distributed partners or colleagues

  • Experience of presenting to board level leaders

  • Curious, inquisitive mind set

  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced and fluid business environment

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work across a wide range of teams and build effective working relationships

  • Ability to effectively lead cross-functional teams without direct reporting relationships

  • Experience in business process improvement,

  • Fluent English both spoken and written

  • Ability to travel if the need arose

  • Flexibility in times of change


Desired Qualifications/Skills: Must be able to demonstrate at least two of the following for consideration:

  • Experience with Sales Incentives (design, optimization, monitoring or quality controls).

  • Experience in Operational Excellence, Compliance, Conduct Risk, Operational Risk or a related discipline, ideally in more than one of these discipline

  • Demonstrated experience of dealing with risk and control programs

  • Demonstrated ability to creatively drive effective high impact issue identification and resolution

  • Experience of control design and development of control and process testing.
