FOCUS 
  • Provides engineering leadership and operational oversight across a portfolio of typically 5 to 8 Software Products / Technology Platforms. 

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT 
  • Leading a team of high performing Engineering Leaders (Directors, Scrum masters, Engineers, and Architects) to enable delivery 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 

Software Engineering:  

  • Be a hands-on technologist that can not only do effective code reviews but can also code, understands what a pull request means, and understands code etiquette

  • Understand the overall picture of product roadmap (1 – 3 years) and collaborate with peers, architects and engineers to identify architecture roadmap.

  • Understand how the team is delivering and recognize and manage capacity in order to effectively deliver cutting-edge product that links customer needs and business drivers together.

  • Accountable for portfolio metrics, including: High Availability, Resiliency, Performance and Cost-Effectiveness.

  • Drive key architectural decisions and design considerations to ensure system scalability and resiliency.

  • Institute software coding, coding review, testing, release management and bug tracking standards meet or exceed the guidelines defined by the enterprise standards committee.

  • Ensure team’s adherence to AEMP’s, controls, and PRSA’s 

Leadership:  

  • Build a culture of enterprise-thinking, innovation and creativity across teams, deliver dynamic software solutions, and inspire change

  • Provide technical leadership to product development teams that deliver on the company’s technology vision and strategy in an agile environment.

  • Attract, retain and develop the best engineering talent in the market; teach, mentor and cultivate technology leaders within the team. 

  • Demonstrate thought leadership to overcome challenges and inspire change.

  • Communicate with senior leaders to align strategy direction and changes.

  • Represent senior technical experts within Technology and collaborate with peers to integrate new technology and capabilities into scalable software solutions, standard methodologies across the company, globally.

  • Enable and support an engineering culture, including tools and processes to empower team members, provide opportunities for growth and development, to be more engaged

  • Lead with an external view, embrace industry change to drive effectiveness into existing engineering and delivery processes, building ambitious solutions.

  • Consultative, knowing when to insert their Technical Architecture expertise to add value

  • Evaluate and introduce new technologies and innovative ideas to drive opportunities and gain the competitive edge.

  • Collaborate with members of other technology teams in defining standards in design, architecture, security, technology-stack, release management, etc. 

  • Improve productivity, quality and delivery velocity by introducing DevOps culture and support solutions that enable continuous integration/delivery to bring the reduction in cycle time.  

  • Define precise, well-understood and easily measurable objectives and key results for the department, teams, and individuals.  

  • Foster a collaborative work environment that is innovative and embraces change.   

SCOPE OF IMPACT / INFLUENCE 
  • Serve as engineering function leader for critical Software Products and/or Technology Platforms that support one or more Company Platforms

  • Influence the product and technology roadmap with strategic vendors





Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, engineering, or related field required; advanced degree preferred

  • At least 10+ years of hands-on engineering and/or software development

  • 5+ years of large-scale capabilities product engineering experience with contemporary tools and delivery methods in a complex environment (i.e. DevOps, CD/CI, Agile, etc.)

  • 6+ years, preferred, of demonstrated experience leading highly-complex, technically challenging, cross-functional software teams in a senior technical leadership capacity.

  • Extensive experience as a leader within the AET organization and/or in a engineering leadership role at a product development company

  • Experience attracting, hiring, retaining and leading top engineering talent and building highly effective teams

  • Deep understanding of the Product / Technology Platform’s underlying tech stack and its core components

  • Hands on development experience in modern technologies (e.g. Java, Go, React, JSON, etc.) along with strong knowledge on databases including NoSQL DBs

  • High degree of technical savvy and strong systems integration architecture skills with a proven ability of turning new technologies into business solutions

  • Experience leading teams to work in a collaborative environment to drive delivery

  • External technology contributions, such as patents, noteworthy Open Source attributions, publications, etc.

  • Able to define, influence and deliver capabilities and solutions against strategic plans that promote Company Platform objectives

  • Extraordinary influential and collaboration skills; ability to drive consensus and tangible outcomes, demonstrated by breaking down silos and fostering cross communication process

  • Technical expertise related to the core components of the tech stack, as well as delivery optimization techniques in a ‘total dev’ continuous delivery environment

  • Expert-level relevant hands-on engineering skills across a broad range of technologies, including knowledge of enterprise-grade APIs and Services using state-of-the-art techniques (REST, JSON, etc.) that can be readily consumed through a self-service implementation model (full SDK, test stubs, test data, etc.)

  • Able to lead multiple priorities and rapidly guide the organization through change moments

  • Ability to run large-scale applications in terms of performance, production assurance and threat mitigation

  • Must be a relationship builder capable of influencing and collaborating in a partner-intensive environment.
