The Strategic Planning Group (SPG) is the Company’s enterprise strategy and internal consulting division. SPG serves as a partner to key leaders, the executive team, and the CEO, providing thought leadership and an external perspective on the most critical strategic initiatives and pressing challenges facing the Company. The group was formed in 1977 as an incubator for strategy. Today, the group consists of approximately 45 professionals across London and New York, serving all business units globally.

 

SPG advises the Enterprise leadership – the CEO, business unit and functional group senior leaders on matters related to Payments. The team’s role includes framing and analysing complex business problems, developing recommendations and partnering with leadership to drive execution, facilitating governance and communication processes, and playing a key role in informing and influencing decision-making.

 

SPG is also known as a key external talent pipeline for future leaders at American Express. Individuals within the group transition to take on key leadership roles across various business units, armed with the breadth of experience, exposure to senior management and leadership skills developed during their time with SPG.

 

The Director of Strategy will join as a member of SPG and s/he will help define & articulate corporate and business strategy via various project engagements across global business units.

 

The Director of Strategy will work both autonomously and in collaboration with strategy development, strategic analysis, market research, business development and other disciplines to enhance American Express’ payments industry leadership position.  S/he will also be expected to lead various project teams, mentor other team members and be a key contributor to building a successful and sustainable practice that is seen as true thought partners to the Enterprise and individual business units.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Identify the value creation opportunities for each project

  • Provide intellectual leadership to the team to ensure the highest quality of analytical and conceptual output.

  • Build and maintain consensus with stakeholders on objectives, critical issues, workplan, implications, recommendations, and implementation plan

  • Effectively manage the formal and informal professional development of team members

  • Promote each member's development through skill planning, coaching and performance feedback. Clearly allocate the responsibilities among project team members, balancing the fulfilment of team goals with the professional growth and satisfaction of individuals

  • Collaborate effectively as member of a project team and with other colleagues. Collaborate effectively with senior leaders internally to utilize their expertise and insight

  • Contribute to SPG’s initiatives and activities (e.g. involvement in knowledge building efforts, mentoring, recruiting, and training)

Qualifications

  • External or internal consulting experience with 1+ years at a team lead level

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills (issue identification, problem structuring, analysis, development of actionable recommendations) in management consulting

  • Must be able to thrive in a hypothesis-based environment

  • Demonstrated ability developing and presenting compelling communications written and verbally

  • Demonstrated ability to manage client engagements, client relationships, and provide “thought leadership” to teams, fully owning the responsibility for the quality of engagements

  • Experience leading a consulting project team and developing high performing individuals

  • A solid track record of building strong stakeholder relationships with large organizations, as well as identifying opportunities to deepen those relationships and grow the business

  • Ability to work collaboratively in different team environments
