The Analyst, GCS (Global Commercial Services) Segment Controllership will provide support to the Manager GCS Segment Controllership and develop in role their business partnering skills, inputting to and assisting with research and the documentation of key business initiatives, accounting advisory services and controllership lead projects.


Segment Controllers work closely with the Business Teams such as Pricing, Client Managers, and Risk Management as well as colleagues within Finance such as LFO, Tax, and other Controllership teams.


A Segment Controller’s primary role is to provide accounting guidance that resonates with various teams mentioned above therefore, this role will require helping the Manager to develop and sustain impactful relationships with various Business Partners.


This position offers excellent exposure to a diverse and talented team of controllership professionals who support a broad array of American Express businesses and products. 

Primary responsibilities, but not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the research and analysis required to provide accounting advice on contract terms during the deal negotiation process to Business Partners

  • Research and provide support for resolution of issues and queries, as directed by Manager

  • Support the Manager with specific accounting and technical reviews driven by internal requirements and as raised by key business partners

  • Support the implementation process for new products/offerings through analysis of the product construct, bench-marking against accounting policies and internal deal protocol and processes

  • Assist in the Post Implementation Review of product launches and initiatives to ensure compliance with accounting conclusions derived, as directed by Manager

  • Partner with Accounting & Reporting teams particularly within the JAPA and EMEA regions to analyze and research operational feasibility of accounting conclusions

  • Assist in the preparation of board presentations, senior management updates, development of training for business partners, coordination of group meetings and other initiatives as required

  • Support the Manager with process enhancement, remediation and driving efficiency

  • Respond to queries and requests for information and assistance in Manager’s absence

  • Performing ad hoc monitoring analysis of key balance sheet items impacting the GCS segment

  • Tracking of monthly Risks & Opportunities impacting the GCS segment

Please note there is flexibility for this role to be based in London or our Burgess Hill offices and a flexible working pattern between both locations.

  • Fully / part qualified accountant (or equivalent); good understanding of US GAAP

  • Cumulative accounting / finance or/and relevant experience

  • Strong accounting and financial acumen

  • Ability to communicate accounting and financial concepts to business partners, customers at similar levels and to a variety of audiences, many with minimal accounting knowledge

  • The ability to critically think through and analyze solutions to accounting requirements and financial objectives

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to identify and assist in the resolution of  queries and track issues to conclusion

  • An affinity and ability to develop strong relationships

  • Excellent numeracy, written and verbal communication skills; confident and engaging

  • Ability to share technical knowledge and proactively encourage others to do the same

  • Ability to work independently from Leader
