About the organization:
Operational Excellence is a comprehensive and integrated program designed to identify, measure, assess, report, monitor and control operational risk exposures facing American Express (AXP). Through a collaborative partnership with risk and control groups, marketing, and product teams, the Operational Excellence team drives a robust first line of defense across the Global Consumer Services Group (GCSG) and Global Advertising and Brand Management (GABM) organizations, advising partners on how to effectively balance business growth objectives with a strong, effective control environment supported by the company’s Operational Excellence Framework. This framework consists of several core components, grouped into pillars, including governance, risk assessment, business and environment internal control factors, and reporting and monitoring.
This position will be responsible for supporting risk identification and control enhancements for complex, high-priority initiatives that require rapid response and engagement. The role will also work closely with Internal Audit Group (IAG), Independent Compliance Testing (ICT), Controllership and the Operational Risk Governance Group (ORGG) to maintain a strong control environment across the US Consumer businesses.
Among the specific activities, this role will:
Support development and implementation of risk management approach for key initiatives, as well as audit and compliance review findings.
Partner with IAG, ICT, and Controllership to facilitate information requests to the business during reviews and advise our business partners on approach for remediating any findings.
Assist with management of ORGG control rating requirements to ensure alignment from US Consumer Operational Excellence teams and business partners.
Present to leadership on updates related to enterprise policies, new risk initiatives and monthly metrics in order to maintain compliance and a mitigated risk environment throughout the team.
Evaluate and document business processes and controls, develop control enhancements, support control testing activities, and gain stakeholder buy-in.
Prepare high-quality presentations, communications, reporting and deliverables to be shared with key stakeholders and senior leaders.
Track key program deadlines, policies, and updates to ensure awareness and compliance across team.
This position will report to the Vice President, US Consumer Marketing Services, Operational Excellence- Risk & Information Management.

- 2-4 years of experience in operational risk management, strategy, internal control and process or similar function within the Banking or Financial Services industries
- Solid risk and control, and/or process improvement related background, preferably experience in risk assessment, control design and testing of controls
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop relationships with key stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills with ability to succeed in a fast-paced, collaborative and team-oriented environment with evolving business needs
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously and independently
- Proactive, quick learner, results-oriented and strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
