The Manager, GMS Segment Controllership will serve as the point of contact for various Business Partners, providing accounting advisory services and thought leadership for a range of transactions executed primarily by the GMS Business.
Segment Controllers work closely with the Business Teams such as Pricing, Client Managers, and Risk Management as well as colleagues within Finance such as LFO, Tax, and other Controllership teams. Transactions covered are mostly merchant acquiring deals including new product offerings and other arrangements that impact the GMS Business.
Segment Controller’s primary role is to provide accounting guidance that resonates with various teams mentioned above therefore, this role requires developing and sustaining impactful relationships with various Business Partners.
This position offers excellent exposure to a diverse and talented team of controllership professionals who support a broad array of American Express businesses and products.
What Type of Work Will I Do?
- Collaborate with different Business Partners and provide accounting advice on contract terms during the deal negotiation process.
- Support the implementation of new products/offerings, accounting policies and processes.
- Partner with Accounting & Reporting teams particularly within the JAPA and EMEA regions to ensure operational feasibility of accounting conclusion through to execution of accounting conclusions.
- Assist, and at times manage, special projects, including preparation of board presentations, development of training, coordination of group meetings and other initiatives as required.
Please note there is flexibility for this role to be based in London or the role can be located at our Burgess Hill offices and a flexible working pattern between both locations.

Good understanding of US GAAP
The ability to develop optimal and compliant solutions to accounting and financial objectives and articulate accounting concepts to a variety of audiences, many with minimal accounting knowledge.
An affinity and ability for developing strong relationships.
Excellent numeracy, written and verbal communication skills; confident and engaging.
Excellent leadership and collaborative skills, with the ability to generate action, influence decisions with limited authority and manage expectations in high-pressure situations.
