The Agile Marketing Center of Excellence is an award winning team that supports the highest priorities of Global Commercial Services (GCS). Agile Marketing is part of the Marketing Strategy & Planning group. This group is the starting point of everything that we do globally under the principle of “creating once for many”. They are responsible for evolving the GCS Brand Strategy and delivering an end-to-end marketing strategy and communications plans for GCS. To execute these strategies, they are reimagining the technology we use to accelerate marketing excellence and drive the enterprise’s Agile Marketing agenda.


Agile Marketing is a program introduced at American Express in 2017 – taking agile methodologies (a proven way of working in software development) and applying them to our Marketing processes and functions.  The goal was to create timely, customer-first communications through iterative testing to drive better business results, faster speed-to-market and helping colleagues feel more motivated and fulfilled.  Today we have four full scrum teams operating across Customer and Acquisition Marketing and a goal to double that number by the end of 2020 (including International expansion). We also provide GCS marketers with access to an Agile Marketing best practice called Rapid Review—a consultative service lead by Agile Marketing Scrum Masters providing faster offline approval for complex marketing assets in any channel.


Role Description:

The demonstrated leader will effectively manage the Agile Marketing program across GCS.  This Director will set the overall strategy and roadmap for scale, coach existing Agile Marketing teams and stand up/train new teams rolling out across various marketing organizations and markets.  He/she will set the overall vision for the program including full end-to-end Agile and best practices that can be distributed more broadly.  The role requires effective collaboration with Senior Leaders and Business Partners of all band levels across the division.  Additionally, the effective candidate will be able to lead through ambiguity, coach effectively and inspire followership within a matrixed organization.


Key Responsibilities Include:

    Thought leadership/creative problem solving to challenge the status quo and drive progressive improvement

    Developing strong working relationships with executive leaders, business partners, and stakeholders in order to achieve results and enact wide-scale impact across GCS

    Driving the usage of Agile principles/best practices by fostering teams, managing relationships with stakeholders, identifying opportunities and obstacles/risks, developing strategic recommendations, and ensuring deliverables are optimally executed

    Results and change leadership, including the planning and development of key initiatives that result in achievement of sustainable, transformational results

    Effective people leadership and acting as a coach and mentor to direct reports and other junior colleagues

    Viewpoint and benchmarking of competitive landscape on the use of Agile Marketing






  • Strong desire to evolve the use of Agile methodology and an interest in business agility

  • Strong knowledge of marketing functions - including processes and pain points - with a keen eye on how to make them better
