The Controllership organization is responsible for the financial operations, reporting, and technical accounting advisory of American Express. The team works closely with all business units and core service provides to ensure financial integrity and a strong financial control environment. Strategic Enablement & Governance (“SEG”) is a vertical within Controllership that empowers Controllership teams to achieve organizational excellence through industry-leading governance, controls and innovation. 
 
The Controllership Strategy & Process Improvement (S&PI) Manager is part of the SEG organization and will be responsible for supporting ideation, development, and execution of high-impact strategic initiatives for the Controllership organization. Based on business need, there will also be a project management and delivery component. The role will have exposure to Senior Leadership.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Own initiatives to further refine and standardize processes and operating models related to enhancing the S&PI team’s effectiveness
  • Interface with senior leaders in Controllership and the Finance organization within American Express to advocate for new strategic initiatives
  • Support strategic development of initiatives that enable Controllership to deliver process efficiencies
  • Contribute to and lead brainstorming and creative strategy discussions
  • Analyze benchmark industry information and external/internal research to provide recommendations for changes and improvements to business systems and processes
  • Identify proactive opportunities for holistic and tactical improvement in quality and efficiency
  • Proactively take part in expanding skill-sharing, project learnings, and fellow colleague coaching

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3 – 5 years of work experience within one or a combination of the following areas:  Management Consulting, Financial Services, In-House Strategy
  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel proficiency
  • Capability to translate ideas into well-defined executable strategies and solutions
  • Ability to multi-task effectively and prioritize different activities while maintain accuracy and adhering to tight deadlines
  • Proponent of collaborative approach to identify opportunities and solutions
  • Proven experience in project management and delivery of programs requiring cross-functional coordination
  • Strong executive presence and proficiency in written and verbal communication
  • Superior analytical skills (quantitative and qualitative) coupled with an ability to make an assessment of a situation without always having the full picture
